Cobalt Water Global are experts in coupling knowledge of urban water systems with AI techniques to account for things that cannot be inferred with the naked eye, or with mathematical models alone, and offer a more holistic (TotalWATER) approach to developing sustainable urban water solutions. Water experts who are also experts in AI is a rarity and we are very proud to have it as part of the foundation of our TotalWATER approach.
TotalWATER AI is Cobalt Water Global’s AI approach, using expert knowledge of urban water systems and AI to: 1) identify opportunities to couple AI techniques with other tools for solving specific urban water problems; 2) design and implement specific/custom AI frameworks; and 3) use data to learn and apply expert reasoning within the tools for sustainable decision making. Check out our TotalWATER AI products/services below.
N2ORisk DSS
It is the decade of Climate Action and many water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) already have to or have chosen to reduce GHG emissions. However, there has been no practical solution for nitrous oxide (N2O), which is produced from the biological wastewater treatment process. N2O can easily make up the majority of the WRRF GHG emissions given its extremely high global warming potential (300 times higher than CO2). Well, now there is the N2ORisk DSS. Developed by founder Jose Porro et al. at the University of Girona LEQUIA research group, the N2ORisk DSS incorporates AI and machine learning to quickly diagnose the risk of producing N2O at WRRFs, quantify emissions, and identify strategies for N2O mitigation via simple control adjustments. Using the N2ORisk DSS, up to a 70% GHG reduction has been achieved in full-scale tests for essentially no investments. To learn more about the N2ORisk DSS, go to our N2ORisk DSS page.
Activated Sludge Risk Model
The inspiration of the N2O Risk Model, the basic engine for the N2ORisk DSS, the Activated Sludge (AS) risk model, also developed by the LEQUIA research group, uses AI to diagnose the risk of costly operational problems related to sludge bulking (from filamentous bacteria) and foaming in the wastewater treatment process. As the AS risk model parameters and outputs are directly related to microbiological conditions leading to sludge settling problems, actions to mitigate risk for settling problems can be easily identified. Cobalt Water Global offers risk modeling and integrated risk/process modeling expertise/tools for evaluating solutions to ongoing problems or to check that proposed optimization strategies do not lead to settling problems of a biological nature. Here is an example of how we can provide AI insights for predictive control via a digitial twin to always monitor and avoid risk of filamentous sludge bulking in a water resource recovery facility...click here.
Novedar_EDSS
Exclusively licensed to Cobalt Water Global from the Spanish university partners of the Novedar Consolider Consortium, the Novedar_EDSS implements a decision support framework incorporating artificial intelligence (expert systems) for selecting sustainable wastewater treatment technologies. It normally takes months to evaluate only a few treatment alternatives using state-of-the-art approaches. The Novedar_EDSS can evaluate a whole library of conventional and innovative technologies using expert reasoning in literally seconds, maximizing the real power of AI. All of this is done with sustainability imbedded in the tool with technical, economic, environmental, and social scoring of treatment alternatives and user-defined weighting of each. Contact us for technology selection decision support incorporating the Novedar_EDSS and a streamlined and sustainable approach to treatment technology selection. Check out the press release from the University of Girona on the Novedar_EDSS here.
AI and Digital Water Transformation
As we head into a new decade where essentially everything is driven by data and AI, urban water management as we know it must change and water professionals need to brave in adopting this new world. Letting go of old proven methods can be difficult and even more challenging when the way forward is not clear. On the water side, there is widespread lack of knowledge/experience in what is possible in terms of using data and AI to identify more cost effective and sustainable water management schemes. The data analytics experts also have a dilemma because they do not know water systems well, they do not know the problems, and they are just not familiar with the objectives and what it takes to meet them on a day-to-day basis. So there is a big disconnect and you can get all the fancy data processing and visualization in the world, but still end up with very little to no value.
Our TotalWATER AI approach ensures that there is no disconnect from the water expert knowledge and the added value that data, AI and machine learning can provide for smarter decisions and a more sustainable water management. Our team of water and AI experts fill the void between water system knowledge and AI/data analytics and helps utilities navigate the waters of digital water. We have done this on an individual problem level, as well as at a utility-wide level. We start with a workshop to bring in all the key stakeholders, layout the objectives/problems, identify all the relevant data sources, and then develop a solution that leverages water system knowledge, data, AI, and digital twin (if necessary) to best meet the objectives and solve the problems. We achieve digital transformation brick by brick, or problem by problem so value is gained each step of the way.
Future TotalWATER AI products/services
We are continuously building out the suite of TotalWATER AI tools/services as we speak and are developing and adding them one by one. So make sure to keep an eye out for new additions.
