Current Landscape
The Paris Agreement and Climate Crisis are pushing water utilities across the globe to reduce their GHG emissions. Water utilities need a cost-effective plan to take Climate Action immediately as some have set net zero emissions targets by as early as 2030.

Why Do Current Solutions Fall Short?
Using renewable energy (biogas, wind, and solar), onsite or offsite, and energy efficiency measures are two of the most common methods to reduce water resource recovery facility (WRRF) GHGs. These methods are needed to achieve energy neutrality, but by increasing renewable energy and energy efficiency beyond net zero energy, net energy positivity can be used to offset Scope 1 emissions such as nitrous oxide (N2O).  N2O can make up to 80% of the WRRF carbon footprint and is produced and emitted when the wastewater treatment process is not properly optimized.  Purchasing carbon offsets has also gained in popularity in recent years. However, all of these options are cost-intensive and do not actually reduce N2O, which not only is a GHG, but also a major ozone depleter. This means that if you offset N2O emissions rather than reducing them, you still deplete the ozone layer. Therefore, it is faster, more impactful, and costs less to reduce N2O.

Jose Porro, Founder and CEO is a top international expert on mitigating N2O emissions from WRRFs.  The N2ORisk DSS is a product of his PhD research integrating AI and mathematical modelling for minimizing N2O emissions from WRRFs.
